Running Physiotherapy

We are often asked, “How does physio for running differ from regular physio?”

At Kaizen Physiotherapy & Performance, we are passionate about keeping our clients fit, active and performing. Our extensive experience in managing high level athletes leaves us well equipped to help you achieve your running goals. We believe this sets us apart from other physio practices, who may not have this level of experience in their ranks.

We will design a comprehensive care plan, mixing Strength & Conditioning principles, alongside physiotherapy treatments to aid recovery. We believe that we have the skills to provide the right difficulty of exercises, ensuring you are getting stronger without taking too much performance away from your running. By getting an accurate understanding of your training levels and injury history we will provide exercises that suit your level of running. We will screen your mobility, and assess your running syle.

Alongside our professional experience, we have personal experience participating in various events including half-marathons and Ironman events. We apply both our professional and personal experience to help guide you through your journey.

What are the most common injuries in running?

Anterior knee pain

Pain around your kneecap is one of the most common running injuries. This occurs when the kneecap gets overloaded by high impact.

Stress fractures

Often caused by a sudden increase in running distance, but can also be caused by poor nutrition, hormonal imbalances and Osteoporosis

Low back pain

The repeated high impact can cause strain on your lower back. Sometimes, running with a rucksack can cause this.

Iliotibial band pain (commonly known as Runner’s knee)

Pain, often with swelling, on the outside of the knee. Although the pain is in the knee, it is often caused by an issue around the hip.

Glute tendon pain

Your glute muscles play an important role in the biomechanics of running. If not properly strengthened, you can get pain in this region.

Muscle tears

In particular calf tears and hamstring tears. These typically happen if the muscles are too weak and running distance/speed is increased quickly.

Achilles tendiniitis

Inflammation of the Achilles tendon commonly occurs due to calf tightness, calf weakness and poor biomechanics.

Ankle sprain

Often injured when by uneven surfaces or when changing direction suddenly. Sprains can take much longer than expected to recover.!

What causes these injuries?

Running injuries are typically multifactorial. Whilst there are usually obvious identifiable causes such as a lack of mobility, strength, stability or power. We will thoroughly question and assess to determine whether there are other factors such as nutrition, rest or potential medical causes to your symptoms.
