Manual Therapy FAQs

Is Physiotherapy just about massage?

Physiotherapy is much more than just massage. Whilst massage may be utilised as a component of treatment, physiotherapy is a broader healthcare profession focused on helping people recover from injury, illness, or disability through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education, and advice. Physiotherapists are trained healthcare professionals who assess and treat a wide range of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiopulmonary systems.

The range of treatment options available in a physiotherapy session include:

  1. Exercise therapy, like reformer pilates

  2. Manual therapy

  3. Education and advice about the specific condition

  4. Acupuncture

  5. Rehabilitation through functional training

What is the difference between a chiropractor and physiotherapy?

Both are healthcare professions that aim to help individuals improve their physical well-being and function, often achieving good results. However, both of their approaches and philosophies do differ when it comes to treatment modalities.

Chiropractors typically focus more on spine pain, relying on manipulations to relieve patients symptoms. Whilst a physiotherapist is also trained to offer manual therapy, they will typically include exercise, functional rehabilitation and education around the causes of back pain to help clients manage their symptoms long-term.

Is manual therapy dangerous?

Manually therapy is generally considered a safe treatment. However, as with any form of medical treatment, there are potential risks and contraindications to consider. Before starting treatment, your healthcare provider should go through a thorough individual assessment to ensure that there are no contraindications based on your health. For example, if you have osteoporosis, spinal instability, or are in your first trimester of pregnancy, certain manual techniques are not recommended. If you have any questions regarding this, please ensure you asking the treating therapist for more information.

What should I wear for a massage appointment?

Loose, comfortable clothing is recommended for clients, ideally shorts and a vest top, so that the physiotherapist can easily access the treatment area. Tight-fitting garments will restrict movement and can feel uncomfortable. We’d recommend removing jewellery that may cause discomfort. Likewise, typing your hair back away from your neck and face will also help.
