Acupuncture

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a therapeutic technique that involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body. It is based on traditional Chinese medicine principles and aims to promote the body's natural healing process, restore balance, and alleviate pain or discomfort.

2. How does acupuncture work in physiotherapy?

In physiotherapy, acupuncture is used as an adjunctive treatment to address various musculoskeletal conditions and promote pain relief. The precise mechanism of acupuncture is not fully understood, but it is believed to stimulate the nervous system, release natural pain-relieving substances (endorphins), and improve blood circulation to the targeted areas.

3. How will I know if acupuncture is working for me?

Determining whether acupuncture is working for you can involve several factors, including your subjective experience and the progress you observe in your symptoms. Some of the common indicators that acupuncture is being effective include: a reduction in pain, improved function, improved general well-being (fatigue, nausea, headaches), increased relaxation, improved energy levels.

4. Can physiotherapists perform acupuncture?

Yes, additional training and certification in acupuncture is available for physiotherapists. If you would like to see this certification please ask ahead of your appointment!

5. What conditions can acupuncture help with in physiotherapy?

Acupuncture can be beneficial for various musculoskeletal conditions commonly treated in physiotherapy, such as back pain, neck pain, joint pain, muscle strains, and headaches. It may also be used to assist with post-surgical rehabilitation, sports injuries, and certain chronic pain conditions.

6. Is acupuncture safe?

When performed by a trained and qualified physiotherapist acupuncturist, acupuncture is generally safe. They adhere to strict hygiene standards and use sterile, disposable needles to minimise the risk of infection. However, it is important to disclose any pre-existing medical conditions or medications you are taking before undergoing acupuncture, as there may be certain precautions or contraindications to consider.

7. Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture is generally well-tolerated, and many people report feeling minimal discomfort during the insertion of the needles. The needles used in acupuncture are extremely thin, and the sensation experienced can vary from person to person. Some individuals may feel a slight tingling, dull ache, or mild warmth at the needle insertion site. Any discomfort should be temporary and subside quickly.

8. How many acupuncture sessions are typically needed?

The number of acupuncture sessions required can vary depending on the individual, the specific condition being treated, and its severity. Acupuncture is often used as part of a comprehensive physiotherapy treatment plan, which may include other modalities such as exercises, manual therapy, and education. We will always assess your progress and adjust the treatment plan accordingly.

9. How long does acupuncture last?

An acupuncture session will typically last around 30 minutes. After the needles are inserted, they are usually left in place for about 15 to 25 minutes. During an acupuncture session, we will begin by discussing your symptoms, medical history, and treatment goals. The number of needles used and the length of time they remain inserted can vary based on each individual treatment plan. Sometimes the needles are gently manipulated to enhance the effects.

It's important to note that the overall duration of treatment with acupuncture can vary depending on the specific condition being addressed, its severity, and how your body responds to the treatment. Some individuals may experience significant improvement after a few sessions, while others may require ongoing or maintenance treatments over a more extended period.

10. How much does acupuncture cost?

At Kaizen Physiotherapy & Performance, acupuncture is used as an adjunct to physiotherapy. Therefore acupuncture is priced the same as a physiotherapy session.
